Marathi compulsory in Maharashtra, "action will be taken for those who oppose," said CM Fadnavis
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis is saying that while everyone in the state has to learn Marathi, picking up extra languages like Hindi is still up to the individual. This comes after the state government made Hindi a must-learn third language in schools, following the new education rules (NEP 2020).
Fadnavis told reporters he's surprised by the backlash against Hindi and the growing love for English. He made it clear that messing with Marathi won't fly. Earlier, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar wasn't happy with the Hindi rule, saying the government shouldn't "force" it on people. He stressed that Marathi is the main language, and the government shouldn't step on the rights of Marathi speakers. A top education official in Maharashtra, Rahul Ashok Rekhawar, said the decision to make Hindi compulsory from Class 1 was made by the education department and is meant to help students, not push any political agenda.
